Type 2 diabetes can be a frightening illness because of the various complications that can develop due to uncontrolled and high blood sugar levels. It’s true people who have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes have a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, hypertension, kidney failure and even blindness. Obviously, these are really serious conditions you want to avoid at all costs. To do this, there are a few actions you can take to help lower your risk.

The first action to take is to avoid smoking. If you have Type 2 diabetes and kidney disease, smoking hastens complications such as stroke and heart attack. No doubt you have heard this before. Even if you have been a smoker for many years, it’s really important to break the habit.

Smoking also increases the risk of all the complications associated with Type 2 diabetes. By smoking and having diabetes, you are greatly increasing the chance you will not live to a ripe old age. Instead, unfortunately, you are likely to experience all kinds of issues including heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure.

Smoking is bad enough for anyone’s health, but adding Type 2 diabetes to the mix, can be fatal.

The second step to take is to avoid eating junk food. Processed foods have no nutritional value at all, and only add more salt and sugar to your diet. Filled with preservatives, these processed foods wreak havoc on your body’s hormonal system. Type 2 diabetes is also a hormonal condition, so you don’t want to disrupt your hormones anymore than you have to. By following a healthy eating plan containing plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains, you can avoid those processed foods which are going to have such a negative effect on your blood sugar and weight.

The third step is to avoid living a sedentary lifestyle. Sitting around watching TV and eating snacks, is only going to add more weight to your body and cause your blood sugar levels to be more difficult to control. Doing all you can to avoid diabetic complications, includes adding physical activity to your daily routine.

If you have a job where you spend most of the day sitting at a desk, it’s really important to get up and do at least 30 minutes of exercise 5 to 6 days per week.

Obviously, you want to speak with your doctor before starting any exercise regimen. However, walking, swimming, bike riding or doing any other form of cardiovascular exercise, will help you to begin to lower your blood sugar and reverse your Type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is no longer a condition you must just live with. It need not slowly and inevitably get worse. Take control of the disease… and you may even reverse the condition altogether.
