Losing weight is no fun, but for some it isn’t so much a way of being entertaining as it is a necessity. This is especially true for Type 2 diabetics who rely on maintaining a normal weight to help them control their disease.

1. Don’t skip breakfast. When we are trying to lose weight, we often erroneously adapt the belief that less food is better. While that might be true in some instances, such as when it applies to overeating, it certainly isn’t the case with breakfast. You know the old saying that breakfast is the most important meal of the day? It’s still true.
2. Snack when you should. Research has proven without a doubt that snacking is much healthier than not snacking. Why? Because it keeps your metabolism at a much higher level in between meals, and eliminates the inevitable crash caused by too much time between calorie consumption. Plus, snacking also means we won’t be as hungry at mealtime, which prevents overeating.
3. Utilize cayenne. Studies show cayenne pepper does a wonderful job of speeding up your metabolism. Not a big cayenne fan? Not a problem. It can be easily incorporated into a wide varieties of dishes, often without any detection.
4. Soup things up. Instead of going for a full-blown meal, try having a healthy homemade soup instead. Notice the emphasis on homemade versus store-bought which contain massive amounts of salt. And talk about being economical: a large batch of soup can be spread out over several meals.
5. Eat more oatmeal. Many people don’t realize the benefits of eating oatmeal. It is full of vitamins and minerals, it’s loaded with fiber and it is very filling, too. Not a fan of oatmeal? Then make it more pleasing to the palate by adding in some fresh fruit. Just remember to go with natural varieties of oatmeal and stay way from store brands which are jam-packed with sugar.
6. Hold yourself accountable. We tend to ignore the bathroom scale because of how unkind and unforgiving it is. But as painful as it can be, we need to rely on it to shock us back into the truth. We can try to pull a fast one over on ourselves, our friends, our family and even our co-workers, but like they say “the scale never lies”.
Type 2 diabetes is not a condition you must just live with. By making simple changes to your daily routine, its possible to protect your heart, kidneys, eyes and limbs from the damage often caused by diabetes, and eliminate some of the complications you may already experience. Eating healthily, without a doubt, is the cornerstone of diabetes control.
